» Curriculum & Instruction

Curriculum and Instruction provides the professional studies component for the preparation of effective teachers and school personnel at the bachelor's degree and master's degree levels. The department cooperates with the various academic departments of the University for teacher education preparation. In addition, the department offers graduate programs in the areas of elementary education and instructional technology.

The Teacher Education Programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education  (NCATE) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The Teacher Education Program was accredited initially in 1976 by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. This national accreditation was reaffirmed in 2002 and 2007.

 

» Human Development & Services

The Department of Human Development and Services are to prepare individuals for professional roles in Adult Education, Counseling and School Administration. Departmental studies include philosophical, theoretical, and methodological foundations for adult educational and counseling practices; practical examination of human development and learning through the life span, supervised experience in practice settings and leadership preparation for schools and other educational organizations in a diverse and technological society.

North Carolina A&T State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Counselor Education (school counseling) program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Program offerings in the area of Counselor Education (school counseling) are designed in compliance with the competencies set forth by the Department of Public Instruction. The Counselor Education (school counseling) program and the Human Resources Community/Agency Counseling program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The current curriculum in the Human Resources Rehabilitation Counseling program is aligned and accredited with the standards set forth by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). The Adult Education program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). It also follows professional standards devised by the Commission of Professors of Adult Education.

 

» Human Performance & Leisure Studies

The Department of Human Performance and Leisure Studies will provide the following:

1. Preparation for students planning careers as managers in the sport, fitness and recreation industry.

2. Specialization in teacher education/administration, adapted physical education and sport

     psychology  at the graduate level.

3. Instruction in a wide variety of service courses to meet the needs and interests of all students.

4. Student experiences which will enhance a strong self-concept, emotional stability and social skills

    for positive human relationships.

5. Learning experiences that utilize instructional technology.

6. Encouragement of student's active involvement and participation in professional activities both at

     the state and national levels.

This curriculum will prepare students to take nationally recognized certification exams such as those administered by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE), and the American Council on Exercise (ACE)
