Reading Specialists are needed today more than ever. With the demands of No Child Left Behind, Reading First, and Adequate Yearly Progress it is clear that reading achievement is a societal priority.
North Carolina A & T State University's (NCATSU) Master’s of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) Reading Education Program prepares and trains Reading Professionals for the 21 st Century Learner. Our program is based upon standards set forth by the International Reading Association Standards and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The program emphasizes knowledge of the foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction, instructional practices, approaches, methods, and curriculum materials to support reading and writing instruction, assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction. Additionally, the program emphasizes creating a literate environment that fosters reading and writing.
Literacy skills in reading and writing are paramount to our work as educators in producing a literate citizenry. Therefore, it is imperative that you consider preparation in reading instruction at the level of a Reading Specialist. Why not equip yourself as a teacher with extensive knowledge in reading education? Knowledge and expertise in reading instruction provides you with a plethora of innovative research-based tools to enhance your students’ reading performance. Ultimately, becoming a Reading Specialist enhances your instructional practice and students' reading performance.
NCATSU's M.A.Ed. Reading Education Program is 39 credit hours and may be completed in two years if continuously enrolled for 7 semesters (including summers). Teachers must have an initial 'A' license to enroll. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates add a Reading Specialist (K-12) license to their current North Carolina Teaching License.
