About the Program:
The Rehabilitation Counseling program is a 60-hour program accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illnesses. Rehabilitation Counseling students are equipped with knowledge, skills, and experience to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process. Students are further equipped with unique competencies to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context.
Students in rehabilitation counseling will demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application in:
- Theories and methods of counseling for individuals with physical or mental disabilities in and out of the work environment
- Case management and documentation requirements that meet federal and state legal guidelines
- Medical and psychosocial aspects associated with physical, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities
- Individual and Group Counseling
- Vocational Evaluations and Related Assessments
- Job Development and Placement
- The Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors
The Rehabilitation Counseling program complies with federal laws of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 507 of the Americans with Disability Act of 1990, and Section 508 of the Disability Act of 2001.

Clinical Experiences
The Rehabilitation Counseling program offers extensive field work including practicum and internship. Each student is required to successfully complete a 100 hour Practicum and a 600 hour Internship. Each student is required to obtain 40% of Direct contact hours during both experiences.
Credentials and Certifications
Students in the counseling program are eligible to apply for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of North Carolina.

The program also offers a 12 hour Certificate specialization in Rehabilitation Psychology and Behavioral Medicine and a 12 hour Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions, and Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment. Students can also obtain a 12 hour Certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling.
Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions
The 12 hour Certificate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions (RCBA) prepares culturally competent counselors to address the unique issues encountered by consumers with a variety of addictions, including, but not limited to,
- Alcohol and Drug Abuse
- Gambling Addiction
- Sex Addiction
- Eating Disorders
- Criminal Offense
Specific emphasis is placed on addressing the distinctive needs of racial and ethnic minorities with behavioral addictions which may be overlooked or misunderstood during the treatment process.

Each of the four courses within this certification program includes content on the 12 core functions of addiction counselors as well as a specific focus on diversity.
*This certification program meets the educational requirements of the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board, thus meeting the educational requirements for the Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS).

Certificate in Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment
The 12 hour Certificate Program in Vocational Evaluation and Work Adjustment (VEWA) prepares students to administer, score, and interpret a variety of psychological, cognitive, intelligence, aptitude, and career tests, especially for persons with disabilities. The certificate also prepares specialists who focus on pre-employment and employment skill development along with reintegrating persons with disabilities into the community. The VEWA program also prepares students to obtain national certification as a Professional Vocational Evaluator (PVE).

Certificate in Rehabilitation Psychology and Behavioral Medicine
The 12 hour Certificate Program in Rehabilitation Psychology and Behavioral Medicine prepares counselors who focus on the application of psychological knowledge and skills on behalf of individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions in order to maximize health and welfare, independence, and functional abilities. The certificate also prepares specialists who are concerned with behavioral approaches relevant to the understanding of physical health and illness, and the application of disease prevention, health promotion, treatment, and rehabilitation. There is specific emphasis on the psychological impact of disability, types of assessment tools and procedures utilized to diagnose individuals with various psychological conditions, and the appropriate techniques utilized to treat individuals with psychopathological disorders.

Certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling
Beginning Fall 2009, the Community Counseling Program will offer a certificate in Marriage and Family Counseling. Counseling students who choose the certificate can take their elective courses in the area of Marriage and Family Counseling. This certificate will further prepare students to work in settings that specialize in counseling couples, children, and families. |
