Human Resources (Rehabilitation) Counseling
Mission
The Human Resources (Rehabilitation Counseling) program is designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illnesses.
The Human Resources - Rehabilitation Counseling Program has the following objectives:
- To equip students with knowledge, skills, and experiences to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process
- To increase the student’s knowledge of the role and functions of rehabilitation counselors
- To equip students with unique skills to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context
- To enhance the student's knowledge of the needs and associated resources to meet the evolving needs of persons with disabilities
- To prepare students to obtain professional licensure and certification in the profession of rehabilitation counseling
- To prepare students to address professional issues in Rehabilitation Counseling through professional associations, publications, and professional development
- To prepare students to work in a variety of public and private settings in the rehabilitation counseling profession
About the Program:
The Rehabilitation Counseling program is a 48-hour program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and is designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with persons with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illnesses. Rehabilitation Counseling students are equipped with knowledge, skills, and experience to empower persons with disabilities through the counseling process. Students are further equipped with unique competencies to provide effective rehabilitation counseling services within a cultural context.
Students in rehabilitation counseling will demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and application in:
- Theories and methods of counseling for individuals with physical or mental disabilities in and out of the work environment
- Case management and documentation requirements that meet federal and state legal guidelines
- Medical and psychosocial aspects associated with physical, developmental, and psychiatric disabilities
- Individual and Group Counseling
- Vocational Evaluations and Related Assessments
- Job Development and Placement
- The Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors
The Rehabilitation Counseling program complies with federal laws of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 507 of the Americans with Disability Act of 1990, and Section 508 of the Disability Act of 2001.
Clinical Experiences
The Rehabilitation Counseling program offers extensive field work including practicum and internship. Each student is required to successfully complete a 100 hour Practicum and a 600 hour Internship. Each student is required to obtain 40% of Direct contact hours during both experiences.
Credentials and Certifications
Students in the counseling program are eligible to apply for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of North Carolina.

The program also offers a 12 hour specialization in Rehabilitation Administration and a 12 hour Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions. The 12 hour Certificate and Specialization are optional to students in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program.
Rehabilitation Administration Specialization
The Rehabilitation Administration (RAD) specialization prepares culturally competent counselors who will assume leadership roles within their agency. More specifically, students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become effective leaders, managers, and trainers within the rehabilitation profession.

Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions
The 12 hour Certificate Program in Rehabilitation Counseling and Behavioral Addictions (RCBA) prepares culturally competent counselors to address the unique issues encountered by consumers with a variety of addictions, including, but not limited to,
- Alcohol and Drug Abuse
- Gambling Addiction
- Sex Addiction
- Eating Disorders
- Criminal Offense
Specific emphasis is placed on addressing the distinctive needs of racial and ethnic minorities with behavioral addictions which may be overlooked or misunderstood during the treatment process.

Each of the four courses within this certification program includes content on the 12 core functions of addiction counselors as well as a specific focus on diversity.
*This certification program meets the educational requirements of the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board.
Scholarships
The Rehabilitation Counseling program is pleased to offer numerous Rehabilitation Service Administration scholarships to students in the program. We currently offer 29 Scholarships funding tuition, fees, a monthly living stipend, and travel allowance to select professional conferences. Scholarships are available to degree seeking students and to those students opting to pursue an emphasis in behavioral addictions or vocational evaluation and work adjustment. Scholarships are available on a competitive basis. |
