Department of Economics & Transportation/Logistics - Student Organizations

Economics clubs:

Omicron Delta Epsilon:  Omicron Delta Epsilon is one of the world's largest academic honor societies. The objectives of Omicron Delta Epsilon are recognition of scholastic attainment and the honoring of outstanding achievements in economics; the establishment of closer ties between students and faculty in economics within colleges and universities, and among colleges and universities; the publication of its official journal, The American Economist , and sponsoring of panels at professional meetings as well as the Irving Fisher and Frank W. Taussig competitions.

The School of Business and Economics has had a chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon since 1964.  At present, Dr. D.K. Jeong (jeongd@ncat.edu) is the faculty advisor.  In his testimonial he states,  “The local chapter has been very active and its activities include invited speakers, seminars, student and faculty group discussions, field trips and tutoring services for our students.”

Aggie Economics Association (AEA):
 This is a student organization for economics majors and welcomes those who are considering economics as a major.  This club has a number of objectives.  Among these are the following:

  1. to promote and maintain academic excellence for all students in the major;
  2. to promote and maintain a forum for student networking and keeping abreast of current developments in the field of economics;
  3. to prepare members for success and for post-graduate endeavors;
  4. to cultivate and foster a culture of community service among economics majors;
  5. to encourage and support faculty and student exchanges; and
  6. to underscore and publicize the ongoing relevance of the economics discipline for issues facing all members of the student body.

The AEA engages all economics students in the activities undertaken by Omicron Delta Epsilon, the honor society.  However, the AEA aims to be all embracing and seeks to foster ties among all students who major in economics.  The AEA is a most effective vehicle for economics majors to develop a student-driven agenda, engaging in fundraising or other necessary activities that support that agenda, and presenting student challenges to all other constituencies in the department.

Transportation & SCM club:

Delta Nu Alpha:
  Delta Nu Alpha (DNA) is an international organization of professional men and women in all areas and at all levels of transportation and logistics.

The cornerstone of DNA's success is its emphasis on education - financial assistance and mentoring for students, excellent continuing education opportunities for the work force, and vigilance in communicating changes in regulations.

Here is a recent testimonial from Dr. Kay Dobie, UPS Professor of Transportation, and advisor to the organization:  “As the advisor for Delta Nu Alpha, the Transportation student organization, I have the opportunity to help students develop their leadership skills.  Delta Nu Alpha is affiliated with the national Delta Nu Alpha Fraternity professional organization.   One of our activities is to attend the Annual Transportation Education Conference presented by the professional organization.  The 2005 TEC was held September 15-17 in Milwaukee, WI.  I accompanied 5 students to the conference.  We received scholarships to cover the $250 per student registration fee.  The Transportation Institute helped us with transportation and hotel costs.  Students were able to network with professionals from many companies in the transportation and supply chain field including Jerry Hempstead, V.P. of National Accounts for DHL, Mike Regan, CEO & Chairman of the Board of Tranzact Technologies, Inc, Gary Nichols, Director of Business Development for CFI, Mike Pughes, Corporate Director of Traffic and Logistics, CARQUEST, and Jeff Wilmarth, President, Silver Arrow Express.  We attended sessions on supply chain security issues, especially focusing on disruption, disruption recovery, and compliance.  There were also a series of session on opportunities for education.  The students learned a lot in the sessions, and benefited from the networking opportunities.”
