Transportation Institute
Welcome to the Transportation Institute. Since 1970, the Transportation Institute at North Carolina A&T State University has been a leader in transportation research, education, and technology transfer. Although the Institute does not house an academic program, our activities serve to enhance student learning and faculty development through educational experiences in transportation, research, internships, professional meetings, scholarships and stipends. The Institute also expands faculty research opportunities which provide funded release time, conference travel and summer employment. Indeed, Institute programs create an environment that fosters learning for the 21st century and advances diversity in the transportation workforce. We invite you to join us as we educate the next generation of transportation professionals.

Urban Transit Institute at the Transportation Institute
Center Theme
The theme for the the UTI at the North Carolina A&T State University (NCA&TSU) is increasing research and professional development among diverse populations to improve transportation performance through the use of innovative management techniques and advanced technologies in small urban and rural areas. It is envisioned that the UTI at NCA&TSU will become an axis for: |
- Research and experimentation in transit management techniques and applications of advanced technology, designed to promote greater productivity in the transit industry
- Education and training of transit professionals capable of addressing current and future management, policy and implementation requirements of the industry
- Dissemination of relevant information to transit mangers, policy makers, and riding public in comprehensive and accessible formats
- Research in other areas of transportation, including logistics, highway and rail transportation education, training, and continuing education for secondary students, university students, and transportation professionals.
|
Theses proposed activities will respond to several key areas defined by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). Those areas are: |
- Improved management and productivity of existing transit facilities
- Broader and more effective utilization of advanced technology
- Increased involvement of under-represented populations in transportation professions
|
| The adoption of this theme is in direct response to the needs expressed by the USDOT. It is consistent with the successful track record of NCA&TSU in preparing its graduates with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to meet the multiple challenges facing the transportation industry. The UTI's research will focus on transit solutions; however, the UTI will be multimodal in scope. Problems and solutions related to freight and carrier management will also be studied in the context of safe, efficient, integrated highway and rail systems that transport people and products. through the interdisciplinary, multimodal UTI, a synergy of research, education, and students, as well as local and national transportation practitioners and researchers.
|
| As a result, mobility and economic viability will be advanced in the nation's smaller urban and rural areas. Technology transfer will be a vital component of the UTI's activities, providing workshops, seminars and a variety of written and electronic media for use by transportation practitioners and the general population. These activities will increase transportation awareness and expertise among the nation's populace and decision makers. Given its location at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), the UTI is particularly suited to contribute to the industry's national need to expand and diversify its human resources. Managing and increasing diversity in transportation will represent an additional strength that the UTI will provide, given its own diverse faculty and student body make-up and its extensive outreach to the transportation profession and general population.
|
| A sub-theme of the UTI is the professional capacity building. NCA&TSU has been a leader in the preparation of young people from diverse backgrounds for careers in transportation. Using the resources of the UTI, it is the intention of the Director to position NCA&TSU to assume the leading role in providing transportation professionals from diverse populations for the 21st century. Essentially, NCA&TSU's UTI will provide a synergistic relationship of transportation research, education, and technology transfer by facilitating the interface among transportation mangers, state and federal transportation officials and emerging transportation professionals.
