Summer High School Transportation Institute
OBJECTIVE
The Summer High School Transportation Institute (STI) is a unique concept that exposes high school juniors and seniors to the attractive career choices and opportunities that exist within the transportation industry.
Analysts have predicted that by the 21st century, the transportation industry will experience a shortage in qualified professionals. As a result, the U.S. Department of Transportation, state and local transportation agencies, and the University's Transportation Institute have placed a priority on the recruitment of the "best and brightest" young people to form the nucleus of the transportation workforce for the this century.
As this country and the entire world become increasingly mobile and interactive, highly trained and broad-minded young professionals become essential.
The STI was developed to help respond to that anticipated human resource need. Specifically, the STI strives to provide high school students with:
- basic information on the significance of the transportation industry;
- awareness of career opportunities in public and private sectors of transportation;
- exposure to all spheres of transportation, including passenger automobiles, buses, vans, trains, ships, and planes, as well as freight carrier trucking, rail, shipping, airlines, and pipelines; and
- understanding of business and engineering options available in transportation education at the university level.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to attend the STI, an applicant must be a rising junior or senior in high school. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
QUALIFICATIONS
Participants will be selected for the STI based on their academic achievement, expression of interest in transportation as a possible career choice, and two (2) written recommendations from the student's high school counselor and one instructor.
SITE
The STI is headquartered at the Transportation Institute of the School of Business and Economics on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. Our program has, historically, been a commuter program. However, when supplemental funding is been available, it will be residential. At that time, students are provided on campus housing and get to take full advantage of the college experience. During the course of the STI, weekly field trips will be conducted to a variety of transportation locations. Transportation will be provided for these trips.
SUMMER INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES
Students will be introduced to theoretical and practical aspects of all forms of transportation. Transportation education is increasingly interdisciplinary in its orientation, therefore, students will be exposed to transportation related disciplines such as engineering, economics, marketing, computer science, and public policy. In order to provide students with the broadest understanding, a variety of educational activities will be utilized, including:
- lectures and presentations
- case studies
- group projects
- campus tours
- SAT skills
- cultural and social awareness activities
- field trips
- enrollment in a university-level course
BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS
The STI provides high school students with opportunities to interact with transportation professionals, and to discuss theory and practice in a classroom setting. It fosters diversity in educational and career opportunities in transportation by providing students with skills that will enable them to make knowledgeable decisions concerning transportation as a major. Additionally, each participant receives a weekly stipend and a college level course, tuition-free. Credit from this course can be "banked" toward future enrollment at NCA&TSU as a transportation/logistics or civil engineering major.
Upon successful completion of the STI, participants will be awarded certificates acknowledging their participation.
