2003 Outstanding Student of the Year Award - Jacquelyn C. Underwood
Jacquelyn Candace Underwood has been selected as this year's UTC Outstanding Student of the Year. Candace, as she prefers to be called, is a senior transportation/logistics major. She transferred to North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (A&T) for the expressed purpose of pursuing an undergraduate degree in Transportation/Logistics. Since she has arrived, Candace has been outstanding. She is an honor student and the first student ever to receive the North Carolina Traffic League scholarship.
Miss Underwood has had an remarkable career at A&T. She is a member the Delta Nu Alpha Student Chapter 364, a nationally recognized transportation fraternity, as well as a member of the NCA&TSU Student Chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Student Internship Association, and Sigma Iota Epsilon Honorary Management Fraternity.
Candace has received various awards in recognition of her academic achievement, leadership and community service, which include the Transportation Incentive Award, the Southeastern Transportation Center Education Award, Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship, Greyhound Lines Scholarship. Moreover, she is the recipient of the prestigious Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Candace has indulged in two wholly different transportation internship experiences. They have, however, provided her with a broad frame of reference as she considers her career choice in transportation. First, she interned in the summer of 2001 with Greyhound Lines in Atlanta, GA. As such, she shadowed the Operations Supervisor, was responsible for daily driver log-ins, log-in reports to headquarters and assisted in driver supervision.
The following summer, Candace's internship with the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration in Washington, DC afforded her an experience with government transportation issues. She participated in truck safety inspections and conducted a research project on congestion reduction in downtown Washington, DC. A subsequent research paper on the downtown congestion problem was presented at the close of the internship. Miss Underwood also served as a research assistant in the Urban Transit Institute during her junior academic year. She assisted the Education Coordinator with student activities.
Candace is socially aware and has, therefore, been very involved in community activities. She has been an after school counselor, a volunteer at Exchange SCAN Family Abuse Center and a local recreation center, and is currently a big sister to an elementary student in the Big Brother/Big Sister of Greater Greensboro volunteer program. Upon graduation she plans to pursue a graduate degree in supply chain management
