Parents and Study Abroad

Parents and Study Abroad

Your student is embarking on an adventure that lasts a lifetime! Study abroad is often a learning experience for the participants' family, especially if it's the first time the student has lived far away from home. Oftentimes, during the experience abroad, students are even more independent than when they are at college. Whether your student involves you in the decision making process, or later when he or she is sharing travel stories, parents, family and friends back home can provide essential support during the experience. If you have questions about academic and financial requirements for students who spend a semester or year abroad, please contact the Office of International Programs at oip@ncat.edu or phone (336)334-7104.

How can you provide support?
Consider the following…

Study abroad tends to be an experience filled with emotional highs and lows

Students need as much support as possible via letters (with pictures, memorabilia), phone calls, personal contacts abroad, etc.

Your knowing the process of cultural shock/adjustment can help you chart your student's progression.
