Media Statement from
Chancellor Stanley Battle, NC A&T State University
Chancellor Charlie Nelms,
NCCU
As educational leaders and chief executives of our respective universities,
we are the official spokespersons for the decisions, actions and direction
of our institutions. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State
University and North Carolina Central University are sister institutions
within the
UNC System with a long and distinguished history of providing high quality
educational experiences and services to young men and women. We graduate
young people who make a difference in the state, nation and the world.
Athletics is just one dimension of a much broader relationship that we
share.
We want to be clear about the following:
- The behavior demonstrated in last Saturday’s 79th competition was
reprehensible and abhorrent and was not in keeping with the quality,
traditions and records of our institutions.
- This behavior will not be tolerated and we have made this clear
to our teams, athletic staff, coaches and students. Excellence is just
as important on the field as in the classroom. Conduct and deportment
are critical
aspects of our commitment to excellence.
- We will resolve this situation
to sustain the integrity of our institutions and ensure the safety
of players and staff at all future
athletic events. We humbly apologize to the alumni, faculty, staff,
students, fans
and citizens of our great State for this inappropriate altercation.
- As leaders of our respective institutions, we will take the appropriate
actions to ensure that this inconsonant behavior never occurs again.
