Adverse Weather Policy

Adverse Weather Policy

Snow, ice and other natural emergencies in the Piedmont Triad can have an affect on class schedules and the workday at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

When Chancellor Stanley F. Battle makes a decision about a cancellation, delay or early dismissal, the Office of University Relations promptly disseminates an announcement to appropriate news media. Efforts are made to ensure that an announcement is broadcast between 6 - 6:15 a.m. N.C. A&T will open as usual if an announcement is not made by 6:30 a.m.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to listen to local television and radio stations for information on the status of the school/work day. In addition, the A&T InfoLine (336-334-7325) provides information about emergency closings when appropriate. Do not call news media for emergency closing information. Those who want a quicker answer regarding the status of university offices and classes during emergencies may visit the A&T website at http://www.ncat.edu.

Employees subject to the State Personnel Act (SPA) should keep in mind that the university will remain open during adverse weather conditions unless otherwise officially notified by Chancellor Battle through local media or internal reporting. Official notice regarding temporary closing of the university consists of the following:

Closings before the workday begins

When adverse weather or other emergencies occur before the workday begins, every effort will be made to give official notification of closings between 6 - 6:30 a.m. When the university is open, employees who are absent or report late will have lost time charged to vacation or bonus leave or earned compensatory time. When it has been determined that the university will be officially closed by the Chancellor, time lost will not be charged to vacation leave. To account for time not worked, please refer to the Adverse Weather Policy that is found at http://businessfinance.ncat.edu/HRS/S11_ADVE.HTM.

Closings during the workday

When adverse weather conditions develop during the workday, notification of an impending closing will be given via appropriate reporting mechanisms. When the decision is to remain open, employees anticipating special problems in transportation should be permitted to use vacation or bonus leave privileges or earned compensatory time as early in the day as possible.

Supervisors may arrange work schedules to allow employees to make up time, or employees may choose to charge leave for time lost due to adverse weather.

In accordance with the Supreme Court ruling declaring that state and local governments subject to the Fair Labor Standards Acts, any make-up time worked will be subject to overtime compensation. Overtime must be approved in advance.

Employees who are already on pre-arranged vacation or sick leave must charge leave to the appropriate account with no provision for make-up time.

The adverse weather policy and an adverse weather table are available on the N.C. A&T website under the Division of Business and Finance at http://businessfinance.ncat.edu.
