N.C. A&T Chancellor Emeritus James C. Renick
appointed Dr. Janice G. Brewington as interim provost and
vice chancellor of academic affairs on May 1, 2006, to
replace Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers who became president of Norfolk
State University.
Brewington has held key leadership positions in A&T’s Division of Academic Affairs. She served as assistant dean and interim dean in the School of Nursing and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs/institutional planning, assessment and research. She previously held this role before taking an administrative leave for one year as a corporate manager.
In 2004-2005, Brewington was an executive on loan with The Gillette Company in Boston, Mass., as the manager for the university relations department in talent acquisitions, global shared services for North America. She managed college recruitment for businesses across the Company, aligned with corporate strategy.
Originally from Greensboro, Brewington received a B.S.N. degree from A&T, a M.S.N. degree from Emory University, and a Ph.D. degree in health policy and administration from the School of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She minored in organizational behavior at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Business.
A pediatric nurse practitioner, Brewington also provides organizational development consultation services to businesses, city and county agencies, and universities in areas such as organization assessment, team building, effective management, conflict resolution, communication systems, leadership, consensus building and program assessment and evaluation.
Brewington’s professional life includes staff nurse, nurse practitioner/supervisor, entrepreneur, director, professor, assistant dean, interim dean, consultant, associate vice chancellor, and manager. Her professional experiences also include Bennett College, UNC-Greensboro, Guilford County Department of Health, and Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Brewington has received many professional honors and awards; been involved with national and international research activities; led numerous grant and special funding projects; and published in refereed journals, books and other publications. Her global activities have included outreach programs in Egypt; women in leadership and health care projects in Thailand; and women’s health issues in Africa.
Memberships include the American Nurses Association (ANA), Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Inc., NC Nurses Association and A.K. Rice Institute. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Brewington has served as a member of the North Carolina Board of Nursing and chaired the Education Committee. She has served on various community boards including Moses Cone Health System Board of Trustees, United Way of Greater Greensboro, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, Guilford Technical Community College Board of Trustees, Well Spring Board of Directors, and Guilford Adult Health Advisory Committee.
Brewington is married to Dr. Thomas Brewington, and they have
five children, Randy, Michelle, Aisha, Tracy and Brea.
