Campus Safety Tips From SGA

Campus Safety Tips From SGA Attorney General

    Aggie Family:
Please read and share with others the following safety tips created by our own, Amina Cliette, Student Government Association Attorney General. We always appreciate and look forward to good ideas from students and the SGA leadership.

Following the crisis at Virginia Tech, the SGA Forum provided many creative suggestions for the A&T crisis plan.

In addition, we thank those of you who called University Relations and emailed feedback regarding the A&T crisis plan on Wednesday. Your ideas are being forwarded to the right person leading that specific area.

We invite all members of the A&T family to also send your suggestions regarding the A&T crisis plan or A&T communications. Please forward your ideas to mables@ncat.edu.

    From:
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Student Government Association

    To the Student Body:

The North Carolina A&T State University Police & Public Safety Department has launched a thorough investigation to solve an incident that occurred Oct. 29th. Two freshmen were attacked by three unknown assailants near Aggie Village. The twin brothers were stabbed while walking from Williams Cafeteria toward Aggie Village. The motive or the perpetrators have not been discovered at this time. The brothers were treated and released from Moses Cone Hospital. SGA is concerned about the safety and well being of these two students and all students and would suggest that everyone take the following precautions at all times:

    • BE ALERT
Your safety depends mostly upon your own attitude and actions. Use common sense and do not place yourself in a location or situation to become a victim of crime.

    • IF YOU OBSERVE ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY OR WISH TO REPORT ANY CRIMINAL ACT, CALL CAMPUS POLICE IMMEDIATELY AT 336-334-7675
For police, fire or medical emergencies, you may contact University Police 334-7675 or call 911 from an off-campus phone or on a campus phone. You may also use any of the emergency call boxes throughout the campus. Simply push the button, or follow the instructions on the phone, to be in direct contact with University Police. The campus community is encouraged to report all crimes and safety-related incidents to the University Police as quickly as possible.

    • IF YOU BECOME AWARE OF A CRIME, OBSERVE A SUSPICIOUS PERSON OR SITUATION OR ARE A VICTIM YOURSELF, PROMPTLY REPORT IT TO THE CAMPUS SAFETY & POLICE.
Timely reports increase the likelihood that critical evidence will be obtained, stolen property will be recovered and the offender will be successfully prosecuted. A prompt report to the police will also ensure that you are made aware of all available victim support services.

    • AVOID WALKING ALONE AT NIGHT
Make arrangements to walk in groups whenever possible or call Aggie Escort at 334-7309. Hours of operation for the Aggie Escort are 6:00pm-1:00am. If you must travel alone at night, stay on well-lit paths and sidewalks.

    • REPORT ALL SECURITY-RELATED MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS
Locks, doors, windows, exterior lights in need of replacement, shrubbery in need of trimming or other unsafe conditions should be reported immediately to the Physical Plant at 334-7016.

    • PARK YOUR CAR IN WELL-LIT AREAS AND KEEP IT LOCKED
Lock all valuables in your trunk. If you have expensive stereo equipment, etc., consider buying an alarm system.

    • KEEP YOUR ROOM DOOR LOCKED AT ALL TIMES
Locking your door with your key, wherever you reside, is an effective way to reduce theft and enhance personal safety. The vast majority of thefts occur from unlocked rooms when the occupant is gone only briefly. Do not prop open exterior doors, and close any doors you find propped open. Propped doors are a high risk and greatly increase chances of your victimization. Do not open your door to someone you do not know.
