Centenarian Receives A&T's 2008 Human Rights Medal

Dr. George H. Evans & wife Margueritte WebsterNorth Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University awarded Dr. George H. Evans, a local Greensboro medical doctor, the 2008 Human Rights Medal, Friday, Feb. 1 at the university's 48th Sit-In Anniversary Celebration.

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and members of the community attended the event which also honored the A&T/Greensboro Four - Joseph McNeil, Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell Blair, Jr.), Franklin McCain and the late David Richmond. The university also announced the naming for the Aggie Village residence halls after the A&T Four.

Evans began his medical practice in Greensboro in December 1934 and has delivered over 3000 babies in the city. He retired in 1981 after 47 years of dedicated service. He and his wife, Margueritte Webster have been married since September 23, 1934.

Originally from Milan, Tennessee, Evans attended Roger Williams University in Nashville. He graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1933 and received his initial hospital training at City Hospital, Number 2 (later renamed Homer G. Phillips Hospital) in St. Louis, Missouri. He furthered his graduate training at the Polyclinic Hospital in New York City.

Aside from his dedication to his patients, Evans served on many civic and religious organizations. He is a former Board of Trustees member and former secretary of the board of the L. Richardson Memorial Hospital. He served as chief of the staff at L. Richardson from 1950-1951 and worked at the hospital for the entire 47 years he was in practice. He was a member of the Old North State Medical Society, where he continues to be active.

Evans was appointed chairman of the Mayor's Special Committee on Human Relations for his work in the struggle for integration. Among many other memberships, Evans continues to be an active member of the Greensboro Men's Club.

He is a member of St. James Presbyterian Church and once served in the Men's Choir, the Trustee Board and the Community Relations and Finance committees. He and his wife Marguerite are the proud parents of one son, James Webster Evans, now deceased. They have two grandsons, James Alan Evans and Alexander Noel Evans.
