North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is currently seeking
nominations for its Human Rights Medal. The Human Rights Medal is awarded to
an individual who has had a positive impact on correcting social injustices
and other humanitarian activities. Activities might include human welfare and
social reform, acts of heroism, promotion of fellowship, dedication to technological
discovery, academic advancements or contributions, diplomatic endeavors and
community contributions.
The award was established by A&T Chancellor Emeritus James C. Renick
to honor individuals whose courageous actions are a reflection of the extraordinary
action against social injustices that was demonstrated by Dr. Jibreel Khazan
(Ezell Blair Jr.), Dr. Franklin McCain Sr., Dr. Joseph Alfred McNeil and
the late Dr. David Richmond Jr.
Any outstanding individual who has had a positive impact on humanity is
eligible to receive this award for one or more of the following reasons:
- Correcting social injustice
- Heroism
- Promotion of fellowship
- Technological discovery
- Academic contributions
- Diplomatic achievements
- Human welfare
- Social reform
- Significant community contributions
Candidates for this award may be locally, nationally or internationally
recognized. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, 2008.

The winner will be notified in December and will be invited to accept the
award at The Sit-In Breakfast marking the 49th anniversary of the Greensboro
Sit-In Movement. The event is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. The recipient must be able to accept the award in person at the Sit-In
Breakfast, which is held on A&T’s campus and give a lecture
at a mutually agreed upon university event.
Past honorees include Lewis A. Brandon, Vincent G. Harding, Rosemarie Freeney
Harding, Atty. J. Kenneth Lee, Dr. Julius L. Chambers and Dr. George H. Evans.
