James McMillan: Retrospective Images and Impressions

The University Galleries will feature a retrospective exhibition of the work of Greensboro artist and retired art educator James C. McMillan in James McMillan: Retrospective Images and Impressions. The exhibition will showcase over thirty works of art, both painting and sculpture, which span an artistic career of more than sixty years.

James McMillan is a Professor Emeritus of the Art Department at Guilford College (1969-1988) and also Bennett College (1947-1969). McMillan earned his B.A. in art from Howard University where he studied with Lois Mailou Jones, James Lesesne Wells and James Porter to name a few. In 1947, McMillan became the first African-American to receive a fellowship at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine . His studies continued later at the Académie Julien in Paris, France (1950-51); Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he completed his M.F.A. in sculpture (1952) and finally Syracuse University in New York for advanced and doctoral study in painting (1958, 1960-61). His work can be found in many North Carolina collections including North Carolina Central University Art Museum , the Weatherspoon Art Museum , and Guilford College Art Gallery .

An opening reception will take place on Thursday, January 12, 2006 in the Dudley Building Multipurpose Room from 5:30 to 7:30 pm . The exhibition will be located in the Henry Clinton Taylor Gallery on the first floor of the Dudley Building and the general exhibition dates will be from January 13 through March 3, 2006 . The University Galleries will also host a gallery talk for the artist on January 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm in the Dudley Building Multipurpose Room.

The University Galleries are located on the corner of Dudley and Bluford Streets at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University . Take East Market Street north from downtown and take a left on Dudley Street. Afterwards, take a right on University Circle (look for a blue street sign identified as University Circle ). The Dudley Building is located within University Circle , which surrounds the A&T/Greensboro Four statue. The hours of operation are from 10: 00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday and Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Galleries are closed Sundays, Mondays and University holidays.
