Sonya Kovalevskaya

High School Mathematics Day

Thursday, October 30, 1997

The Department of Mathematics at North Carolina A&T State University has received a grant from AWM (Association for Women in Mathematics) and NSA (National Security Agency) to organize the Sonya Kovalevskaya High School Mathematics Day. The day is named in honor of Sonya Kovalevskaya who was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics with specialty in partial differential equations in 1874 from the University of Gottingen. Young women from area high schools are being encouraged to consider careers in mathematics and science through the Sonya Kovalevskaya High School Mathematics Day.

We plan a day full of activities that would introduce women high school students and high school teachers of both genders to exciting applications of mathematics and to encourage both students and teachers to think of mathematics as an appropriate field for women to enter. The event will take place in Marteena Hall for Physical Science and Mathematics on the Campus of NCA&T State University.

Schedule:

Problem solving competition: In order to allow more time for other activities we have decided to organize the problem solving competition in the following way: Each teacher that pre-registers will receive in the mail problems that he/she gives to their selected group of students to solve. The solutions are then returned to the Math Department of NCA&T. The correct solutions will be displayed in the building and recognized on October 30. Awards and prizes will be given.

More on the sessions: The students will be divided into three groups for the afternoon session. One group will attend a lecture/workshop by our guest speaker from NSA on the application of mathematics in criptology. The problem solution session will present and comment on the solutions to our contest as well as include some other problems and appropriate topics. Mathematics and the Internet with Applications Workshop will take place in a computer lab and show students how to get to some of the relevant web sights as well as some simple applications of the Math software packages like MAPLE. For teachers we plan to have a lecture/discussion on some of the problems and experiences in teaching women given by a professor from an all female institution.

Selection of students: The program is intended for high-school female students of any grade level who have potential and/or interest in mathematics. Each teacher should provide the organizer with a list of students interested in the event . Based on the response the teacher will be notified by the organizer as to how many students can be invited to participate. Lunch and Transportation: The organizer will provide lunch and refreshments for all participants. Teachers are responsible for organizing the transportation. Please contact the organizer if transportation is a problem. At this time we would like to get a confirmation from you that you are interested and able to come and to get an idea on the number of students that you would accompany.

Lunch and Transportation: The organizer will provide lunch and refreshments for all participants. Teachers are responsible for organizing the transportation. Please contact the organizer if transportation is a problem.
