North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s establishment of a unique and innovative doctoral degree in Leadership Studies is reflective of its expansion into the uncharted waters of higher education. The program is inherently interdisciplinary, supporting the University’s vision and mission. The program is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders and researchers. Therefore, the integration of disciplines offers students an opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in a variety of disciplines across the university’s academic areas. The Leadership Studies Program is designed to enhance leadership in agriculture, business, industry, education, engineering, science, technology, military and the medical fields. Our program mission is to expand the knowledge base of concepts and theories of leadership through research and experiences. It enhances a scholar / practitioners approach in the preparation of leaders. We expect students to enhance and expand their participation through research to ensure that contributions are made to the learned society. In addition, our expectations are guided by a rigorous program that engages them in professional activities. Therefore, students realize and make significant contributions to the expansion of knowledge in leadership. In this Leadership Program, if we are to prepare tomorrow’s leaders to possess effective behaviors and actions, the interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy in Leadership Studies must emphasize diversity, ethics, information technology, informed practice and research. “Preparing Leaders for Tomorrow,” is a goal that distinguishes the program based on an interdisciplinary approach that is reflective of an inclusive curriculum. “Therefore, as we launch the ship of leaders on its inaugural voyage, I expect the students to guide it to an unprecedented national and international harbor of accomplishments through research.”
