  1. What is Aggie LAWN?
    Aggie Local Area Wireless Network (LAWN) is an optional network designed for faculty, staff, students and guests who are mobile computer users. It is an expansion of the initial pilot wireless network.

  2. What does it allow you to do?
    It allows mobile users access to limited computing resources available to them from campus offices and/or common areas.


  3. Why is Aggie LAWN an optional network?
    Aggie LAWN provides convenience for mobile users accessing the network. It is not displacing or meant to replace the campus wired network.

  4. Who will have access to the Aggie LAWN?
    Anyone authorized with a valid e-mail account will have access the Aggie LAWN. You will need a valid e-mail account to access the Aggie LAWN.

  5. Will non-supported rogue access points be allowed on the Aggie LAWN?
    No. Only approved and registered devices will be allowed.

  6. Why are we changing our wireless access process?
    It is necessary to make these changes so that we can enhance the security of the campus and reduce the vulnerabilities.

  7. What hardware needs to be installed in my laptop for wireless access?
    This is dependant upon the make and model of the laptop.

    1. IBM - Laptop models above R40 have the latest wireless card. However, additional drivers are required for LEAP (encryption) support. Please contact the ITT Help Desk to obtain these drivers.


    2. Dell - Laptop models with the centrino processor have the latest wireless card. However, additional drivers are required for LEAP (encryption) support. Please contact the ITT Help Desk to obtain these drivers.

    3. For IBM and Dell Models not supported it is required to install a Linksys WPC45G version 2 or Aironet 350 access card.


  8. What is LEAP?
    Light Weight Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP) is a Cisco propriety protocol for 802.1x network security. LEAP provides encryption of user data.


  9. What other cards are available and supported by ITT?
    There are other cards that are designated Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) with LEAP support. However, the Linksys and Aironet are the only ones tested by ITT.

  10. What software needs to be installed in my laptop for wireless access?
    Windows XP and Windows 2000 are supported. Apple MAC is not supported.

  11. Who provides the hardware needed?
    End Users are expected to provide the necessary hardware for their laptop. However, the ITT helpdesk has a limited number of emergency loaners cards for university supplied laptops.

  12. Will my wireless device access the Aggie LAWN?

  13. How will guests access the Aggie LAWN?
    The campus host will log in for guests using the host's credentials.

  14. How long will it take to configure my wireless device for the Aggie LAWN?
    The average is 30 minutes. However, the actual time will depend on the conditions of the user’s wireless device.

  15. Will I notice any change in wireless service?
    No. Once properly configured, the users will see no noticeable changes in services. However, the users will have increased security, more mobility and capability for higher speeds.

  16. What are the costs associated with the wireless hardware and software?
    LEAP-compatible cards cost between $50 and $150.

  17. When will the entire campus be wireless?
    Beginning Fall 2005, all academic buildings and administrative buildings on the main campus will be wireless. Residential Halls' common areas will be wireless.

  18. Will any of the off-campus buildings be wireless?
    Yes. Wendover and Yanceyville.

  19. Is there a primary contact for the Help Desk?
    Yes. The Help Desk Manager 334-7195.

  20. Will the Help Desk commit to a turnaround time for configuration?
    Yes. The turnaround will be based on staff availability and priority.

  21. Will there be on-going communication about wireless implementation?
    Yes. Periodically, commmunication will be sent out to the campus. Additionally, the campus community will be notified whenever changes are made to the network. Communication will be via AggieNet, EPA ListServ, SPA Listserv, Supervisor Listserv, Blackboard announcement screen and the Aggie LAWN website.

  22. Will access to e-mail and other applications be changed by the new wireless process?
    No.

  23. Are the changes permanent?
    Yes. However, the wireless network is an ongoing process that will continuously change due to upgrades and enhancements.

  24. Will the Bookstore have a supply of the wireless cards?
    Yes. The Bookstore will have a supply of Linksys WPC54G version 2 cards available by the beginning of the Fall Semester.

  25. Will the logon to the University network change?
    No.

  26. Will there be training?
    Yes. There will be short seminars for the ITT staff and End Users beginning in the fall. Schedules will be posted on the web-site.

  27. What are some future usages of the Aggie LAWN?
    We will continue to enhance our network. Information about additional features and enhancements will be provided once it has been made available.
