The Print Journalism Concentration focuses on the theory and practice of news writing and editing principles. Researching, interpreting, organizing, and reporting the facts are essential skills students will develop during the course of study in print journalism. Students will also gain competencies in publication design for newspapers and magazines. The curriculum entails the study of theory, history, and ethical journalism principles, as well as a strong base in the liberal arts. Print Journalism students gain considerable practical experience to supplement classroom instruction through active participation with the weekly university newspaper, A&T Register. It provides students with day-to-day experiences in newspaper publication, management, advertising, and photography. All staff positions are primarily occupied by print students. Guest lectures such as Pearl Stewart of the Freedom Forum, Lisa Bouchey of Business Life, as well as magazine writer Elizabeth Seymour have provided students with an increased awareness of the publication industry. In recent years, print students have taken on internships as far as New York with major publications such as Heart & Soul and with local publications such as the News & Record and Triad Style. With a concentration in print journalism, students are also prepared for employment in the online publishing industry.
