As a foreign student or
scholar, you do not have
to obtain a North
Carolina Driver’s
License if you possess a
valid driver’s license
from your country. If
your home country
driver’s license is not
written in English, you
must also have an
International Driver’s
License. However, if
you intend to drive in
the U.S.A., it is
strongly recommended
that you obtain a NC
State Driver’s License.
This will help to avoid
problems if you are
stopped for a traffic
violation or at some
other time when you need
to present a driver’s
license.
Individuals with a
designation of “duration
of status” need to have
an immigration document
(i.e. I-20 or DS-2019)
that is valid for more
than 6 months in the
future as one of their
forms of
identification.
To apply for a North
Carolina Driver’s
License, it will be
necessary to present
required proof of age
and identity. When
applying for a driver’s
license or non-driver’s
identification card you
need to supply the
Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV) with a
sufficient number of
documents for
identification
purposes. Refer to the
below examples of
acceptable forms of
documentation:
Ø
Proof of legal age
(birth certificate)
Ø
Proof of identity
Ø
Passport/I-94 Card
Ø
School Transcript
Ø
Diploma
Ø
School I.D. Card (Aggie
One Card)
Ø
International Driver’s
License
Ø
Photo I.D. from Company
Also required is proof
of automobile liability
insurance coverage. The
ISSO cannot officially
recommend a particular
insurance company. For
listings of automobile
insurance companies
check the yellow pages
of your local telephone
book.
You must apply directly
at one of the local
offices for a driver’s
license. If you wish to
obtain a driver’s
handbook you can go
on-line to their website
or visit a local DMV
office.
