The proposed manufacturing coalition has a number of linkages with other
successfully established undergraduate educational efforts funded by NSF,
such as ECSEL (MIT) , SYNTHESIS (Cornell and Tuskegee) , and SUCCEED
(NCAT). These will broaden and strengthen our effort. Both SYNTHESIS and
ECSEL are submitting proposals for consideration under TRP Activity Area
A.3.7 (Supplementary Education Awards to Ongoing Centers and Coalitions
Devoted to Manufacturing). While the institutional overlap with any one of
these other multi-partner coalitions is minimal, they bring valuable
experiences in specific aspects of our educational strategy for
manufacturing (e.g. in integrating design across the curriculum and
developing multimedia educational materials) of which we expect to take
full advantage. More formal mechanisms will be established to coordinate
the activities of those and our coalitions.
We are also aware that a number of other proposals. being considered by
ARPA under the TRP Joint Program Solicitation (SOL93-29) in the Technology
Development Activity Area (A.1) and the MADE Program BAA (93-20) are of
direct relevance to the realization of the Learning Factory concept. Some
of those proposals involve institutions from this coalition and we are
coordinating with them. After selection decisions are made by ARPA, we will
make the necessary action to develop formal mechanisms of collaboration
with such other funded activities.
