Humanities and Social Science Electives

Black/Global Studies Requirements - beginning in the Fall of 1994, all new incoming students will be required to take one 3 credit course under the category of African/African American Studies (those courses marked with a * in the Humanities and/or Social Sciences Electives List) and one 3 credit course under the category of Global Studies (those courses marked with a # in the Humanities and/or Social Sciences Electives List). These two courses satisfy 6 credit hours of the total Humanities and/or Social Sciences elective requirements. See Table at the end of Humanities and Social Sciences Lists.
Humanities Electives List:
Students must take 6 credits of Humanities Electives. Foreign language courses cannot be in the students' native language. The number in parenthesis indicates the number of course credits. 

To satisfy both the Humanities and the Global Studies requirement, take any one of the following 2-course sequences:

  • French: FOLA 100 (3), FOLA 101 (3)

  • Spanish: FOLA 104 (3), 105 (3)

  • German: FOLA 102 (3), 103 (3)

  • Russian: FOLA 106 (3), 107 (3)

  • Japanese: FOLA 108 (3), 109 (3)

  • Portuguese: FOLA 110 (3), 111 (3)

Social Science Electives List:

Students must take six credits of Social Science electives from the following list.  The numbers in parenthesis indicate the number of course credits.

Take the following course:

  • PSYC 320    General Psychology (3)

History Elective

In addition, take one course from the following list:

  • HIST 201      African-American History to 1877 (3)

  • HIST 202      African-American History Since 1877 (3)

  • HIST 215      History of Africa to 1800 (3)

  • HIST 216      History of Africa Since 1800 (3)

  • HIST 320      African History as seen through African Art and Archeology (3)

  • HIST 351      African Americans in the American West (3)

  • HIST 355      African-American Historical Perspectives on Africa (3)

  • HIST 404      African-American Religious History (3)

  • HIST 412      Modernization in Africa from 1920 to the Present (3)

  • HIST 416      History of African-American Culture (3)

  • HIST 440      African-American Intellectual/Philosophical History (3)

  • HIST 444      History of West Africa Since 1800 (3)

  • HIST 455      Comparative Slavery of the Americas (3)
