1. Introduction

Graduate study is for students who are superior in intellect, independent in thought, show initiative in work habits, and are skilled in communication.  Upon completion of the requirements, students should possess a broad perspective of the profession and its functional relationship to industry and society together with a strong capability in one or more areas of intensive study.

Graduate work should be characterized by a high degree of student initiative.  Class assignments and projects are generally made in broad terms, permitting the student to exercise some self-direction in study.  In addition, the direction of research interest is usually left to the student, but must be approved by the advisor. This policy allows the student to mature in initiative and judgment as well as in technical ability.  While the advisor will monitor the student’s program and offer assistance, it remains the student’s responsibility to meet all the requirements of the program.

This handbook contains information about the graduate programs in the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) department at North Carolina A&T State University. Here you will find admission requirements and descriptions of our degree programs and options.

The Graduate Program in Industrial and Systems Engineering offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. For the M.S. degree there are four specialization areas: Human-Machine Systems Engineering, Management Systems Engineering, Production Systems Engineering, and Operations Research / Systems Analysis.

The M.S. degree requires either 30 credits of coursework and a project or 24 credits of coursework and 6 credits of thesis research. The Ph.D. degree requires 57 credits of coursework beyond the B.S. degree and 18 credits of dissertation research. The courses, laboratories, and program requirements are described in detail in later sections.

Most graduate courses are offered in the evening making it possible to complete a masters degree program or Ph.D degree while working full-time; for the Ph.D. degree at least one semester is required as a full time student after course work has been completed. We offer full or partial financial support to many of the graduate students in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships.

The current edition of the North Carolina A&T State University Graduate Catalog contains the university procedures and requirements.  Those procedures and requirements pertain to all graduate work undertaken at the University.  It is the responsibility of each graduate student to ensure that their graduate program conforms to these requirements.

Additional information or clarification about the Graduate School requirements can be obtained from the Office of the Graduate Studies (122 Gibbs Hall) or by telephone  (336) 334-7920.

The graduate program policies outlined in this document apply to graduate degree programs offered by the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) and supplement those policies of the School of Graduate Studies.  It is the responsibility of each graduate student in the Department of Industrial and System Engineering to ensure that their program of graduate work conforms to the department's requirements.
