The Industrial and Systems Engineering Profession

The career opportunities for Industrial and Systems Engineering are broad and often misunderstood.  The Institute of Industrial Engineers defines the profession as follows:

Industrial and Systems Engineering  is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment and energy.

It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, social and information sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained form such systems.

Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISEs) are trained to apply problem solving and design skills to every kind of organization.

ISEs are hired in automobile and computer manufacturing, as well as in aerospace, electronics, food processing, and other manufacturing enterprises.  Likewise, ISEs are hired in service organizations such as banks, hospitals, government and transportation.

Industrial and Systems Engineering can provide value wherever there is a system which can benefit from improvement.

The demand for ISEs has grown dramatically  over the last two decades.  The growth rate is expected to continue to increase.

In today's globally competitive business world, there is an ever-increasing role for IEs.

Due to this, starting salaries for ISEs  rank in the top group of the highest paying engineering disciplines.  Some examples of jobs held by ISEs include:

  • System Integrator

  • System Analyst

  • Operations Manager

  • Manufacturing Engineer

  • Production Supervisor

  • Operations Researcher

  • Ergonomist

  • Human Factors Specialists

  • Quality Engineer or Supply Chain Supervisor

The presence of the word “Systems” in our Department name further emphasizes our focus on performing systemic design and improvement.

Our courses teach and our students understand that organizational and large-scale system engineering requires a broad set of skills and the consideration of a multitude of complex factors.  In addition, our programs focus on using information technology, as an integrating tool to make systems work more smoothly

The primary professional organization for Industrial and Systems Engineering  is

The Institute of Industrial Engineers

North Carolina A&T State University has a large and active chapter of this organization.  This student organization is an excellent resource for finding strong graduates.

In addition to the student chapter, the Piedmont Triad is home to a Senior Chapter of the Institute.

The local chapter is the largest in the Region and very active.
