Honors as a four-year academic experience

Ideally, the Honors Program is a four-year experience of academic enrichment. When you join the Honors Program at the start of your freshman year, you should try to remain in the Program until graduation. When you do this, you will receive, no matter what your major, the best education that A&T has to offer.

The four year Honors Program requires 42 hours of Honors credit distributed as follows:

1. Eighteen credit hours of General Education classes taken for Honors credit. Of these eighteen hours, you must take a minimum of twelve credit hours in special, low enrollment Honors sections of General Education classes. You may take a maximum of six semester hours for Honors credit in regular General Education classes by making arrangements with the instructor for you to participate in special activities in the class that provide added value to your experience beyond that of a non-Honors student taking the same class. These enrichment activities must be identified on an Honors Contract Form, which is signed by you, the instructor, and the Honors Program Director.

2. Six credit hours of low enrollment Honors Seminars.

3. You must also complete eighteen credit hours of classes for Honors credit in your major or in closely allied disciplines required as a component of your major. In some majors, we are able to offer low enrollment classes open only to members of Honors. Otherwise, you may take regular courses in the major or closely allied disciplines for Honors credit by making arrangements with the instructor to carry out special activities in the class that provide added academic value to your experience beyond that of a non-Honors student taking the same class. These enrichment activities must be identified on an Honors Contract Form, which is signed by you, the instructor, and the Honors Program Director.

4. You must earn a minimum grade of ‘B’ in any course taken for Honors credit for it to count towards completing the University Honors Program.

For various reasons, you may not be able to, or want to, participate in the Honors Program throughout your entire academic career. Accordingly, there are two tracks within the Honors Program that you can choose from if you participate in only a portion of the Program. These tracks are, Track I: General Honors and Track II: Honors in the Major.

Track #1: General Honors

The General Honors Track requires 24 hours of classes of which 18 are General Education courses required by your major. Of these 18 credit hours you must take a minimum of twelve credit hours in special, low enrollment Honors sections of General Education classes. You may take a maximum of six semester hours for Honors credit in regular General Education classes by making arrangements with the instructor to participate in special activities that provide an enriched academic experience beyond that of non-Honors students in the same class. These enrichment activities must be identified on an Honors Contract Form that is signed by you, the instructor, and the Honors Program Director. You must also take six credit hours of Honors Seminars. Finally, you must earn a minimum grade of ‘B’ in any course taken for Honors credit for it to count towards completing the General Honors Program.

Track #2: Honors in the Major

The other Program Track open to students who do not pursue Honors as a four-year experience is Honors in the Major. This Track also requires 24 credit hours of classes. Students in the track must take 18 semester hours of classes for Honors credit in their major or in closely allied disciplines required as a component of their major. In some majors, we are able to offer low enrollment classes open only to members of Honors. Otherwise, you may take regular courses in the major or closely allied disciplines for Honors credit by means of the Honors Contract process. You must also take six credit hours of Honors Seminars especially designed for Honors students. Finally, you must earn a minimum grade of‘B’ in any course taken for Honors credit for it to count towards completing Honors in the Major.
