Discrete Math I -- MATH 123 Sections 01 & 02

Fall 2009 -- Dr. Gibson

Office Hours: My office is in Marteena 208.  The phone numbers for the Mathematics Department are 334-7822 and 334-7823.   My office phone is 285-2078 and my email address is gagibson@ncat.eduOffice Hours are as follows: MWF: 10:30am-12:00pm, Tuesday: 2:00-4:30pm, 11:00am to 12:00PM Thursday, and MW: 4:00-5:00pm.  I have a web page, which will contain information about my office hours, course syllabi, and other information.  http://www.ncat.edu/~gagibson/index.html

Attitude: This is college, not high school.  The course will proceed much faster than in high school.  Students must come to class every day, and study their notes between classes as well as work suggested problems to do well in this course.

Textbook: Discrete Mathematics with Applications, 3rd Edition, by Susanna S. Epp.  We will cover chapters 1 through 4, although parts of some sections may be omitted.

Grade Policy: There will be four tests during the semester. The test average is 60% of the final course grade.  The final exam counts as 25%.   Graded homework counts as 10%.  5% Attendance.  The grading scale is 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, and 0-59 F.

Tests:  There will be four tests during the semester.  The lowest test grade will be dropped.

Make Up Tests: Make up tests will not be given.  The missed test will simply be the test that is dropped.

Final Exam: The final exam is NOT optional.  All students must take it.  The final exam grade can not be dropped since it is not a test.  The exam will be held in the same room that the class has met in during the semester.  The exam for the 1 pm MWF class will be on Monday, December 7th, at 10:30am.  The exam for the Tuesday – Thursday class will be on Friday, December 11th, at 1:00pm. .

Homework: Graded homework assignments will be given throughout the semester.  These must be handed in on time.  Failure to turn in homework will lower your final average by one letter grade since homework is worth 10% of your final grade.

Attendance:  All students are expected to attend class each day and to arrive ON TIME.   Arriving late disrupts the class and other students.  Coming from McNair Hall is not an acceptable excuse.  It takes less than 15 minutes to walk from McNair Hall to Marteena Hall.
