The Department of Foreign Languages sponsored two travel abroad programs in the summer of 1996. The first program took place May 30 - June 29 in Costa Rica in conjunction with the Universidad Interamericana of Costa Rica. The ten students participating in the program attended language classes on the university campus in San Jose, Costa Rica, and lived with well selected families.

They participated in a series of planned excursions throughout the country. The students were Erica Pope, Gregory Staton, Corey Curties, April Sturdivant, George Page, Lakertisha Slade, Marika McKie and Lansha Slade - all from North Carolina A&T. Also included were Terrance Hinson from North Carolina Central University and LaRonda Reid from Winston-Salem State. The program directors for the Costa Rica Study Abroad Program were Dr. Mercedes Guijarro-Crouch and Assistant Director, Mr. Jose Bravo de Rueda. Dr. Nita Dewberry, Department Chair, served as program coordinator.

The department also provided a Summer Travel Abroad Program to Europe, June 3-12. Participants in the program visited Paris, the French Riviera (France), and Rome (Italy). Program participants consisted of students, professionals from the community, and A&T faculty. Participating faculty included Drs. Arthur and Rosa Purcell, accompanied by Program Director Dr. Carl Henderson and Assistant Director Mrs. Eva George. Students participating were Tonya Huff, April Reid, and Natasha Waterman.

Several professional members of the community participated as well. According to Dr. Dewberry, the department will sponsor its first Study Abroad Program to Gabon, Africa, the summer of 1997. Its Program Director will be Dr. Emmanuel Ikegwu, a native of that country, and Assistant Professor in the department.
