Minutes from the Jan. 23, 2008 Teleconference
Discussion
-
NCAT recently received 3 Sun SPOT sensors. Classes are under development
for the fall semester, in which students will learn about wireless sensor
networks using the Sun SPOT motes for hands on experience. Eventually,
the data collected by the sensors can be made available for ingest into
the pilot project framework. UAS has worked with a package called
GeoServer for accessing their data using OGC standard interfaces. GeoServer
stores data in a database and automates the process of providing OGC
compliant access to the database. NCAT may also be able to use this
approach.
-
The Juneau science community is getting Science on a Sphere, courtesy of
NOAA fisheries, to be housed at the state museum. UA will be working on
content, and hopefully getting UAS students lined up as docents/hosts, etc.

UAS student information:
-
Ed will be focusing on graduating this semester.
-
Josh will be available for working on the integration of the snow melt
model and possibly some new data streams into the pilot project code.
-
GSD will change the design of the pilot project code, making a framework
that will be easier for students to add modules to. The framework will
be based on the GFE SmartTools design, which is currently in use at the
WFOs for producing gridded forecasts.
-
At U of M, Fernando has tried unsuccessfully to install the original
pilot project code, written in Java and including Shaders. He will try
to install the newer version, and then wants to add analysis modules.
The newer code requires Python, Numeric Python, and CherryPy.
The main page for CherryPy is
http://www.cherrypy.org.
The "Download" anchor is at the top left of the page. You can go to it
directly at
http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/CherryPyDownload.
There's a good tutorial accessible from the "Tutorial" anchor at the top
of the page or directly at
http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/CherryPyTutorial.
There is also a useful table of contents of the official documentation
the anchor to which can be found near the bottom of the main page
(or you can access it directly at
http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/TableOfContents).

Student visits to GSD: during the summer, it would be good to have some
of the ISET students visit GSD, probably just short visits. GSD will
find out what kind of support can be given to this activity.
Next Meeting
The next teleconference will be Wed., February 6 at 9:00 AM MST.
