Discussion
-
Mike Steinbach gave an introduction to his group's research in data mining.
They currently are participating in a project involving NASA earth science data.
Mike will send out a link to the NASA web page, and Albert will add the link
to his ISET web page. Mike said the data is mostly gridded, spatial, temporal
data. The group is working in four areas:
-
creating time series, and clusteringthe time series. Automatically finding
climate indices within the clustered time series, and correlating the indices
w/other variables such as plant growth;
-
finding anomolous readings in the data that indicate ecosystem disturbances,
possibly caused by human activities;
-
classification prediction;
-
association analysis (relating the values of variables).
-
The group discussed possibilities for collaboration with Mike's group. The pilot
project involving UAS data could use some assistance with developing correlation
equations. Everyone is interested in investigating OGC standards, and Mike's
students could do some work in that area. Matt's students will be developing OGC
services for the UAS data, starting this fall, and perhaps a collaboration between
Matt's and Mike's students could be beneficial. Albert also mentioned that his
group is looking for access to large volumes of data to test collaboration algorithms,
and the data mining expertise of Mike's group could be valuable here.
-
Tracy will be visiting NCAT on March 25th to give a seminar. She would like to
talk with Kawana and others to get a feel for what the CS students would interested
in discussing. She would also like to get together with the ISET group during the
week after the seminar.
-
It was suggested that each student involved in this project prepare a 5-minute
presentation (including a few slides) to give during one of our conference calls.
This would help them become more involved in the project. The presentations should
describe the work they're currently doing. We decided that Josh and Kawana would
each give presentations at the next conference call.
-
The September ISET meeting was discussed. We would like to be able to meet for
2 hours each day by ourselves, and will be informing the planning committee of
this. Matt will not be able to attend in September, but will plan on calling in
to our 2-hour meetings.
-
For the 5-year plan: We don't have to wait until we're completely finished with
our sections before submitting anything. Albert will collect pieces as they become
available, and put them together.
-
The current meeting time is not working for the GSD folks, so we changed to
2:30 MDT Mondays. Our next meeting will be : Monday, Aug 13 2:30 MDT
