You need to go to Compaq's web site. From there go to Tech Service/Softpaqs. Search for Presario 4840s. There is an update for the modem that will increase your speed...I too was having this same problem. I found the softpaq on my own and installed it. Now, I connect at 42,000 bps and what a difference. You'll also find softpaqs for other known or unknown problems you might be having.
