Electronic Research Administration

Electronic Research Administration has affected the manner in which we must now do business by utilizing electronic resources such as the Internet, the world-wide web, form templates, databases, and other electronic tools for proposal submission and award tracking. As mandated by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, the Federal government has increasingly moved toward transacting business electronically. This government-wide initiative for Federal agencies requires that electronic research administration be established by all affected agencies and offices to streamline grant application and administration processes.

The OSP staff is available to assist the Principal Investigators (PI) with the timely electronic submission of proposals. Therefore, the proposal information should be submitted to OSP for review at least 5-7 business days in advance of the due date. This will allow time for a thorough review and opportunity to upload the information for submission. Please contact your Grants Administrator prior to beginning any electronic grant application to obtain information on current and developing policies and procedures. Any policies and procedural updates will be provided and training can be scheduled as needed.

Please note:

  • The Office of Sponsored Programs must submit applications electronically on behalf of the researcher.
  • In most cases, Principal Investigators must request usernames and passwords from the Office of Sponsored Programs.
  • Researchers may not register the University for an on-line submission. Specific information will be required; therefore, contact the Office of Sponsored Programs at 334-7995 to initiate any new registration process.

Links to the most commonly used electronic research administration sites are below.

Grants.gov - Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for more than $400 billion in Federal grants. Grants.gov is THE single access point for over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies. The US Department of Health and Human Services is the managing partner for Grants.gov, an initiative that is having an unparalleled impact on the grant community.

CRISP - CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) is a searchable database of federally funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions.

NSF Fastlane - FastLane is an interactive real-time system used to conduct NSF business over the Internet.

iEdison - iEdison (which stands for Interagency Edison) helps government grantees and contractors comply with a federal law, the Bayh-Dole Act. Bayh-Dole regulations require that government funded inventions be reported to the federal agency who made the award. iEdison is interagency because it provides a single interface for grantees and contractors to interact with any participating agency.

eRA NIH Commons - Electronic Research Administration (eRA) is a core service of the Office of Electronic Research and Reports Management (OERRM) in the NIH Office of the Director. OERRM's eRA information technology program provides grants administration support to NIH institutes and centers and to all Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) agencies that fund extramural research. eRA's comprehensive electronic processing system facilitates the Department's end-to-end grant-making functions from application receipt through grant closeout. The system helps DHHS achieve its missions of medical discovery and science management.
