A STIMULUS SUMMER

Summer 2009 will be remembered as one of the busiest for faculty at A&T.  Researchers spent many hours preparing grant proposals in pursuit of funds resulting from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the Stimulus Act.  This $789 billion bill was signed into law by President Obama on February 17.   The bill included new federal funding for higher education, research and  development and infrastructure support.

The lion’s share of the $10.4 billion allocated to R&D was slated for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Over one third of the $75.8 million in proposals prepared by A&T faculty between June 1 and September 30 was submitted to NIH ($26.4 million).  Many of the Stimulus funding opportunities were for construction projects to quickly stimulate job growth and supply purchases.  Construction proposals were $44.5 million of the total.

Awards of grants have been slow due to the large volume of proposals received by the federal agencies.

Even so, awards are being granted and A&T has received $2.3 million in new funding so far.
