Inspiration/Motivation:

From elementary school to graduate school, I was inspired to become a teacher and a scientist by all my teachers and professors. My teachers and professors provided the science ladder for me. Now it is my turn to be the ladder for my students. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a part of this great institution, North Carolina A&T State University, to fulfill my life goal, and as a faculty member to teach and train young people for the society. I chose to work in the applied plant biotechnology area because I believe biotechnology is our future, as demonstrated by the growth of North Carolina biotech industry!

Vision:

In addition to further developing my research laboratory to provide training and mentoring for summer internships for high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, I envision development of following programs and will work diligently to bring them online:

  • MS Biotechnology degree program (in process).
  • Ph.D. Biotechnology degree program.
  • Center of Excellence in Biotechnology to host the academic programs (MS and PhD) and the research program for undergraduate, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows.

Intellectual Property/Patent: two invention disclosures filed.

  • Case No. AG00170905.
  • Case No. AG00180905.

Selected Honors/Awards:

  • 2006 Aggie Star Certificate of Collaboration Award from the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SAES), for contributions to establishing the North Carolina Research Campus.
  • 2005 Aggie Star Certificate of Collaboration Award from the SAES, for contributions to the Golden LEAF Project Team.
  • 2001 Outstanding Young Investigator Award from North Carolina A&T State University.
  • 1999 USDA Secretary’s Honor Awards for Personal and Professional Excellence.

International Activities: served as liaison, assisting the Dean of the SAES and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development in negotiations for Memorandums of Understanding between NCA&T and four Chinese institutions.

  • Jilin Agricultural University, Changchun, Jilin Province, China.
  • China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.
  • Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China.
  • Jilin Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS), Gong Zhu Ling, Jilin Province, China (JAAS is very interested in a formal MOU, but did not have time to formalize the MOU).
