Thompson Says Never, Never, Never Give Up!

  • "In today's knowledge-based society, a high school degree will not suffice."
  • "Very few jobs will be created for low-skilled or semi-skilled persons."
  • "Our intent, our only intent, this summer, was to provide a rigorous, academic residential program that would assist each of you to make a successful transition from high school to North Carolina A&T."

These were the words of Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Alton Thompson congratulating 61 Aggie Impact Scholars during their July 31st closing ceremony. N.C. A&T's chief academic officer presented a motivating message mixed with honesty, wisdom, common sense, and Aggie Pride for the scholars, their parents, and a packed auditorium. Most of the graduates will be freshmen at A&T for the Fall Semester, better prepared to excel, thanks to the Summer Bridge Program.

Some of Thompson's noteworthy quotes geared towards the Aggie Impact Scholars include:

  • "You have been exposed to the study skills and college survival skills needed to be successful at this great University. We expect nothing less."
  • "You have to use your 'mind' to be successful, you need to be able to think, and think critically, you have to problem-solve, you have be able to 'connect the dots.'"
  • "Our academic facilities put the finest learning tools in your hands—they stretch the mind, spark your imagination and make learning exciting and participatory."
  • "Excellence should be part of everything that you do." "You will need employment skills … computer and technology skills, discipline, problem solving skills, analytic skills, critical thinking skills, working in teams, communication (written, verbal and auditory), and mobility."
  • "Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to meet it."
