This year the theme is called Ocean Odyssey and deals with robots and technology used for under sea exploration.

FIRST Lego League Competition

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University College of Engineering will host the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Competition Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Greensboro Center for Innovative Development, a Joint Millennium Campus of N.C. A&T and UNCG, 5900 Summit Avenue, beginning at 9 a.m.

FLL was created through a partnership with the LEGO Company and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), to help bring engineering and computer technology to today’s younger students.

This year’s competition theme is Challenge 2005: Ocean Odyssey. Teams of up to 10 children between the ages of 9-14 will design, build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORM technology to win missions in the quest to protect the future of our oceans, lakes and rivers.

Working in teams of 3-4, students design, build, and program a robot that can accomplish a set of missions within a fixed period of time. Robots are made from Legos and miniature computer controllers. Some missions are easy…some are fiendishly complex.

The winning team will receive the Director’s Award and advance to the WorldFest competition. Teams will also receive additional category awards that day. The event is sponsored by N.C. A&T State University and United Technologies.

A&T Announces Changes in Football Program

North Carolina A&T State University Director of Athletics, Dee Todd, announced Nov. 21 that head football coach George Small and his staff will not return to the Aggie sideline in 2006.

“Today, Coach George Small and his staff were dismissed after careful review and consideration of the direction of our football program. In line with our commitment to the development of student-athletes and to our Division I-AA status, we feel that it is in the best interest of our football program to make this change. This allows the University to begin the process of finding Coach Small’s successor,” said Todd.

The process for finding the next football coach will begin immediately. The University will conduct a national search and will seek someone with extensive experience in the Division I-A ranks that will help A&T become a highly competitive program in the MEAC, one of the most competitive Division I-AA conferences in the country.

“As with each of our institutional goals, building a strong athletics program requires us to look carefully at our strengths and weaknesses and to critically examine the reality within which we operate,” Todd said. “The plan for our athletics programs is to build a strong, successful program that complements A&T’s academic programs."

“The North Carolina A&T State University family thanks Coach Small and staff for their years of service and wishes them and their families the best with their future plans.”

Stith Chosen to Play in Hula Bowl
Western Michigan transfer becomes third Aggie to play in contest

Three seasons ago, Walter Stith began his collegiate career as a 265-pound tight end at Western Michigan University. Now, he stands as a 6-foot-8, 320-pound National Football League prospect at N.C. A&T State University. Stith has been invited to play in the 60th annual Hula Bowl on Jan. 21, 2006.
The Hula Bowl, played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an environment that showcases talent in front of scouts from every NFL team. The head coaches for the two teams will be Tyrone Willingham of Washington and Tommy Tuberville of Auburn, two of the top coaches in NCAA Division I-A football.
The game will be televised on ESPN2 and broadcast worldwide on the Westwood One/CBS radio network.

Stith transferred from Western Michigan last spring and has had an immediate impact this season on the offensive line at the right tackle spot. He was honored as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week after opening holes for a 252-yard rushing performance by the Aggies in a win over Norfolk State.

Stith also had outstanding performances against N.C. Central, where he recorded six pancake blocks while leading teammate Brandon Sweeney to 150 yards rushing on 32 carries. He also had a major role in Sweeney’s 205-yard rushing day in a 40-33 overtime victory at FedEx Field. Stith has been a consistent all season with an average grade of 87% on his blocking. Grades are determined by assignment and execution.

Stith becomes the third Aggie player in eight seasons to play in the Hula Bowl, joining All-Americans Chris McNeil (1997) and Curtis Deloatch (2002).

Three A&T Students Die in Car Wreck

Three North Carolina A&T State University coeds were killed in a car accident Nov. 15 around 10:30 p.m. in Guilford County. According to the State Highway Patrol, Carla M. Marshall, 19, was driving north on Highway 421 and Tiffany H. Kittrell, 19, and Lynai B. Thorne, 19, were in the car.

Marshall was a sophomore from Raeford, NC. Kittrell was a freshman majoring in criminal justice from Alexandria, VA. Thorne was a freshman from Raeford.

“All of us who are part of the North Carolina A&T Family send our sincere thoughts, prayers and concern to the families,” Chancellor James C. Renick said. “The Aggie Family is here to do all we can to provide support and comfort during these difficult days.”

A&T’s Counseling Services provided counseling for students on campus and were available to help others needing support. The Division of Student Affairs worked closely with the entire campus community, especially residence halls, to provide necessary assistance for students.

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community representatives attended a campus memorial service Nov. 20 at A&T’s Memorial Student Union-Exhibit Hall.
