Radio station WNAA,
90.1FM announces plans to air The
Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio
International. A high-energy exchange
of views, information, and insight hosted
by the incomparable Tavis Smiley, the
weekly two-hour show will begin airing
Fridays(s), July 8, 2005, at 6:00 pm.
"Tavis Smiley is extraordinary,"
says General Manager Tony Welborne. "His
incredible intellect, razor-sharp wit,
and charismatic charm make for a terrific
host, and his show is a welcome addition
to our schedule. We're proud to bring
his much-needed perspective to our discerning
public radio audience."
The Tavis Smiley Show
offers a unique blend of news and newsmakers
in expanded conversations, including Attorney
General Alberto Gonzales, former President
Bill Clinton, poet and author Maya Angelou,
and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Smiley also
shares the mic with regular high-profile
commentators Cornel West, Connie Rice,
J.C. Watts, and Michael Eric Dyson. Topics
range from timely national issues to world
events, from breaking news to ongoing
cultural trends, often examined for their
particular relevance to African Americans.
Tavis Smiley is one of the
nation's most prominent media personalities.
He hosts Tavis Smiley on PBS
and is a regular political commentator
on the Tom Joyner Morning Show.
Texas Southern University honored him
with the opening of The Tavis Smiley School
of Communications and The Tavis Smiley
Center for Professional Media Studies,
making him the youngest African American
ever to be so honored.
Recipient of numerous honorary
doctorates, including one from his alma
mater, Indiana University, he established
the Tavis Smiley Foundation "to enlighten,
encourage, and empower black youth."
He has authored eight books — including
The Unfinished Agenda of Brown v.
Board of Education, Keeping the Faith,
and On Air: The Best of Tavis Smiley
— and has his own imprint (Smiley
Books) with Hay House. He lives in Los
Angeles.
