Shamsuddin Ilias joined the department as an Assistant Professor in 1990 and was promoted to Associate Professor in August of 1995. Before coming to A&T, he spent five years with the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, serving as a Research Assistant and an Adjunct faculty member with the Center-of-Excellence in Membrane Technology. He has also served at the University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran as a Research Assistant Engineer with the Water & Environment Division (1980-82) and as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering (1979-80.)

He has been the Chemical Engineering Department nominee for both the Teaching Excellence Award in School of Engineering (1992-93) and for College of Engineering Research Excellence Award (1994-95.)
