DMA Testing Guidelines For Carbon Fiber Composite

Background Objectives:

The objective of this research was to investigate the reasons for discrepancies in measurement of dynamic properties of materials by DMA testing and develop better guidelines.

Approach and Results:

Systematically analyzed DMA testing and the mechanics equations used, discussed with the instrument manufacturer and the author of the handbook. Investigations found a number of issues: specimen preparation and configuration, effect of transverse shear modulus, loading, and the data reduction equations for cylindrical specimen. Based on these results and extensive testing of a wide range of materials, a set of guidelines were developed and verified.

Significance:

Design of ship structures require accurate measurement of dynamic properties of polymer composites, the guidelines developed here will advance the measurement methods.
