A 3-D Stress Concentration Equation for Countersunk Holes

Objectives:

To develop a 3-D stress concentration factor (SCF) (Kt) equation for panels with countersunk rivet holes.

Approach:

Conducted an exhaustive 3-D finite element analysis of countersunk hole in a plate subjected to tensile loads. Countersunk angle and depth, plate thickness and width were varied for a wide range. Based on Fe resultsand limiting conditions, a general equation for Kt was developed and verified.

Significance:

The stress concentration equation provides a valuable data in designing of countersunk holes/joints in aircrafts and other smooth surface structures for tri service DoD agencies.
