Dr. Mark L. Burkey


Dr. Mark L. Burkey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and Transportation/Logistics at NCA&T. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University. His areas of expertise are spatial economics and economic theory involving the subject of transportation costs and location. His research also prominently features the use of GIS and spatial statistical methods in economics. He has been the PI of several grants funded by the NIH and the Federal Highway Administration. He has published his research in journals such as Environmental and Resource Economics, Review of Regional Studies, Transportation Planning and Technology, and Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.

Dr. Lyubov Kurkalova


Dr. Lyubov Kurkalova is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and Transportation/Logistics and with the Energy and Environmental Studies Interdisciplinary Program at NCA&T. She earned her Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Iowa State University. Dr. Kurkalova’s areas of expertise include the economics of bio-energy resources, crop production, and economic incentives for agricultural pollution control. She has been the PI and co-PI on the grants funded by USDA and the US Department of Energy. Her research has been published in a variety of economics and interdisciplinary journals including Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Economics Letters, Journal of Soil and Water Conservation, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, and Climatic Change.

Dr. Stephen P. Holland


Dr. Stephen P. Holland is an Assistant Professor of Economics at UNC-Greensboro. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan. Before coming to UNC Greensboro, he worked at the Federal Trade Commission and the University of California Energy Institute. His areas of expertise include environmental and natural resource economics with special interests in electricity, tradable permits, water, and the theory of depletable resources. He has been the PI on one grant funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and has published his research in journals such as Environmental and Resource Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, RAND Journal of Economics, and Energy Journal.

Dr. Abolghasem Shahbazi


Dr. Abolghasem Shahbazi is the director of the Bioenvironmental Engineering program at NCA&T State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from Penn State University. He has worked on many projects funded by the USDA and the US Department of Energy. He is one of the five co-conveners of North Carolina’s Strategic Plan for Biofuels Leadership. His research appears in such journals as Journal of Food Engineering, Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and Applied Engineering in Agriculture.
