ATL Programs and Activities - Workshops

The Academy for Teaching and Learning sponsors a variety of workshops throughout the academic year focused on issues related to teaching and learning. Workshops are led by national experts and campus leaders in pedagogy, assessment, course design, instructional technology, and interdisciplinary learning. This year's workshops are listed chronologically below.

Teaching, Learning, and Assessment: Interdependent Commitments
Peggy Maki / Terry Rhodes
January, 2005

On January 12-13,2005 Dr. Peggy Maki and Dr. Terry Rhodes led a series of workshops on interdisciplinary teaching and learning and assessment of learning outcomes. Peggy Maki is a former Senior Scholar and Director of Assessment at the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE). She is the author of “Assessing for Learning,” recently published (2004) by Stylus Publishing and AAHE. Terry Rhodes is Vice Provost for Curriculum and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Portland State University. Terry Rhodes oversees the development and assessment of Portland State University ’s award-winning interdisciplinary University Studies curriculum. Dr. Maki and Dr. Rhodes are nationally-acclaimed scholars and workshop leaders in the area of general education and are “resident consultants” at the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ (AAC&U) annual Summer General Education Institute.

What is Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning - And How Do I Do It?
Richard Carp
November, 2004

In November Dr. Richard Carp, Professor and Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Appalachian State University, led a faculty workshop focusing on making the transition from discipline-centered courses to developing interdisciplinary courses. Dr. Carp shared examples of interdisplinary courses being offered at Appalachian State and offered suggestions on how to develop an interdisciplinary, integrative teaching and learning environment.

University Studies Pre-proposal Workshops
September, 2004

NC A&T faculty considering the development of interdisciplinary courses for the new University Studies curriculum that will be implemented in fall, 2005 were encouraged to attend a "pre-proposal" faculty development workshop in September. During the workshop participants developed a conceptual framework for learning outcomes from interdisciplinary courses and were introduced to a variety of assessment strategies for evaluating those learning outcomes.
