Sylvan was one of the most decorated student-athletes during her academic career at Alcorn State. She was a two-sport performer, earning letters in track and volleyball. A two-time All-SWAC selection, she was named preseason SWAC Player of the Year in 2000, although she did not compete due to graduation. Sylvan earned team most valuable player honors twice in her career. On the track, she was a USA Track and Field Indoor National Participant in 2000, and was a provisional qualifier in the long jump, high jump, and the 100-meter high hurdles. A four year SWAC scholar athlete, Sylvan was a two-time recipient of the NCAA Leadership Award. She also received the Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete Award for outstanding academics in 2000. During her career Sylvan was active in several organizations including: NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, SWAC Student-Athlete Association (chairperson), Alcorn State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

In addition to her B.S. degree, Sylvan also earned a Master's degree in secondary education from Alcorn State and is currently pursuing an MBA.
