AGGIES TENNIS CHALLENGES SPARTANS, FALL SHORT
Damon
Martin wins
singles match.
GREENSBORO, N.C., February
6, 2005 –Before
the match N.C.
A&T tennis
coach James
Dunwoody was
confident that
his team could
beat UNCG.
Although
the Aggies came
up short in a
5-2 match, the
Aggies did make
progress by
scoring points
against the
Spartans for the
first time since
the two teams
have been facing
each other.
“This is a seasoned team,
and the players
are strong,”
said Dunwoody.
“We have a
strong chance to
win the MEAC
championship.”
To start the year the
Aggies faced two
ACC opponents in
UNC and NC State
respectively. Both schools shutout the Aggies, but Dunwoody noticed his
team put up more
of a fight
against the Tar
Heels and
Wolfpack.
On Sunday, the best match
of the day was
between N.C.
A&T’s No.
5 player Jerome
Kirkland and
Jason Steinhorn.
Steinhorn
lost the first
set 4-6. He
avoided a loss
by taking
Kirkland to a
tie-
breaker
he won 7-6. The
two men then
fought to a
thrilling 11-9
finale.
Damon Martin did hang on to
win the Aggies
only singles
match of the
afternoon. He
defeated Chris
Mangone 6-4,
6-4.
“This is a very good team
that nobody
knows about,”
Martin said.
“We think that
will change if
we continue to
play hard.”
The Aggies also won a
doubles match as
Martin and his
brother Jeremy
defeated Daniel
Bustamante and
Steinhorn 8-3.
Dunwoody said this team is
the best
collection of
players in the
history of N.C.
A&T tennis.
“They should have won this match, there was no reason for them to lose”, said Dunwoody. “I’m still very proud of this team, fans and parent who come out to support us.”
