AGGIE KEY FACTS

BIG INNING PROPELS UNC GREENSBORO TO WIN OVER AGGIES

Santiago and Oates each drive in two RBI

GREENSBORO, N.C., February 22, 2005 - UNC Greensboro erased a four-run deficit by scoring six runs in the fifth inning and cruised to a 10-5 victory over N.C. A&T in War Memorial Stadium.

The Aggies got a two-run homer from Raul Santiago in the second and a two-run double from Patrick Oates in the fourth to take an early 4-0 lead.

Freshman pitcher John Primus pitched very well in his first collegiate start, allowing just three hits over the first five innings.

The Spartan bats came alive in the sixth, as Primus allowed singles to Roly Gonzalez and Greg Feltise. Jeremy Roulin walked to load the bases, then Chris Mason walked to end the shutout.

Primus was relieved by Clint Summers, who gave up RBI singles to Justin Crist and Jay Maule, which tied the game.

A mishandled grounder by third baseman Charlie Gamble allowed two runs to score, giving the Spartans a 6-4 lead.

The Spartans would get an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single from Chris Mason.

N.C. A&T matched that run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Joe McIntyre, but did not manage another base runner the rest of the way.

Relief pitcher Wes McCall (2-0) got the victory, as he went five inning and allowed one earned run on two hits with six strikeouts.

Summers (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits.

Crist and Maule led the way for the Spartans at the plate, as they each had two hits and an RBI.  Chris Mason drove in two runs and scored twice.

Oates had two hits and two RBI to lead the Aggies, who will host Liberty tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

HIGH POINT GETS OFFENSIVE AGAINST AGGIES

Rosser and McIntyre each get two hits

GREENSBORO, N.C., February 20, 2005 Saturday’s game against High Point University went into extra innings. On Sunday, High Point ended any chance of a repeat by defeating the N.C. A&T baseball team 18-3 at War Memorial Stadium.

Dustin Holtzman led the Panthers by going 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Chris Ramirez added three more hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Neil Rosser led the Aggies with two hits and two runs batted in on the day. Joe McIntyre added two hits as well.

The Aggies fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 3-5 with their second straight win over the Aggies in as many days.

The Panthers broke open the game with a six-run fourth. Holtzman and Jon Pavalack had the two biggest hits of the inning. Holtzman had an RBI double to knock in two runs. Pavalack followed Holtzman with an RBI double to left, driving in two more runs.

The Aggies aided the Panthers with a throwing error, a passed ball and a hit batter in the inning.

Eammon Portice earned the win by going six innings and giving up three runs. Ian DiGiorgio (1-1) got the loss.

The Aggies return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., when they face cross-town rival UNC Greensboro at War Memorial Stadium.

AGGIES LOSE IN EXTRA INNINGS

Second game of the doubleheader was postponed because of darkness

HIGH POINT, N.C., February 19, 2005 – Seby Renta's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Brett Lazar and helped High Point claim a 4-3 extra-inning win over N.C. A&T Saturday in the Panthers' home opener at Erath Field.

The Panthers improve to 2-5. The Aggies drop to 1-3.

Brandon Moore (2-0) earned the win in relief. Erik Neal (0-1) suffered the loss for the Aggies.

A doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, but the length of the game wiped out any chance of completing the second game before darkness fell.

The Aggies pounded out 11 hits, but also left 11 men on base. Jeremy Jones led the Aggies with four hits in five plate appearances. Freshman Nick Mayo had a two-RBI day. In the second inning, he drove in Marcus Mack and Patrick Oates to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

The Aggies led 3-2 going into High Point’s half of the sixth. Panthers slugger Josh Cotton changed that with a lead-off home run to left field, which eventually would force extra innings.

APPALACHIAN STATE DOWNS AGGIES IN HOME OPENER

Jeremy Jones and Chris Williams each go 2-for-4

Greensboro, N.C., February 9, 2005 - Julian Brown, Brad Peisel, and Jimmy Mathias tallied two hits and a run scored apiece to lead Appalachian State to a 6-2 victory over N.C. A&T in War Memorial Stadium.

ASU won its season opener to go 1-0, while N.C. A&T fell to 1-2.

Piesel got the Mountaineers on the board when he blasted a pitch from Andy Peascoe over the right centerfield wall for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Aggies countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jeremy Jones hit a two-out single, then scored off a throwing error by Piesel. Joe McIntyre hit an RBI double to centerfield to score Charlie Gamble for the second run.

Luis Arce hit a two-run double in the top of the second to give ASU a 3-2 lead.

Brian Caudill and Josh Fish combined for six innings of shutout relief for the Mountaineers. Caudill (1-0) earned the pitching victory, as he allowed no runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Fish took the save, allowing just one hit over the final two innings.

Peascoe (0-1) was charged with four earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

Jeremy Jones and Chris Williams led the Aggie batters as they both went 2-for-4 at the plate.

N.C. A&T will travel to High Point for a three game series beginning with a doubleheader on Feb. 19 at noon. The Aggies will return home to host UNC Greensboro on Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.

AGGIES KNOCK OFF DUKE FOR FIRST WIN

Box Score

N.C. A&T scores off Duke miscues in three-run fourth inning.

DURHAM, N.C., February 6, 2005 – N.C. A&T took advantage of three Duke errors to score three runs in the fourth inning, and the Aggies held on for a 4-1 victory over the Blue Devils at Jack Coombs Field.

The win evened both team records at 1-1, as they split the season opening two-game series.

In the pivotal fourth inning, Duke shortstop Brett Bartles booted a grounder from Aggie third baseman Charlie Gamble, putting runners on first and second with one out.  Joe McIntyre hit a grounder to Blue Devil pitcher Danny Otero, but Bartles mishandled Otero’s throw at second, which allowed Jeremy Jones to score. Duke third baseman Kyle Kreick overthrew first base on the next play, which scored Gamble. N.C. A&T got the final run on an RBI groundout by Leighton Walcott.

The Aggies took a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh, as Marcus Mack drove in Raul Santiago on a sacrifice fly.

Duke scored its lone run when Javier Socorro scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, but that was all the Blue Devils could muster.

Aggie pitcher Ian DiGiorgio (1-0) allowed no runs on six hits with three walks to earn the victory. Richard Hawk pitched a scoreless ninth to get his first save.

Otero (0-1) took the loss, despite being charged with no earned runs on four hits. He added four strikeouts with no walks.

Santiago and Patrick Oates each went 2-for-4 to lead the Aggie bats, while Bryan Smith picked up two hits for the Blue Devils.

N.C. A&T will host Appalachian State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.

Box Score

Aggies strand seven runners on base

Greensboro, N.C., February 5, 2005 - Eric Bauman hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, while Greg Burke and David Torcise combined on a five-hit shutout to lead Duke (1-0) to a 2-0 win over N.C. A&T (0-1) at Jack Coombs Field.

After Adam Murray led off the fourth inning with a double, Bauman lined a pitch from Michael Hauff (0-1) over the centerfield wall to give Duke the only offense it needed.

Burke (1-0) pitched five innings and allowed just three hits, while striking out six and walking three.

Torcise went the final four innings, striking out three and allowing just two hits, to earn his first save of the season.

N.C. A&T had two chances to break the shutout late, but Torcise held them off.

In the eighth inning, Jeremy Jones hit a two-out double to left and later advanced to third on a passed ball. But Torcise induced Charlie Gamble to groundout to short to end the threat.

Torcise allowed a leadoff single to Joe McIntrye in the ninth, but he retired the final three batters to end the contest.

Hauff took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead the Aggie bats. Murray and Bauman had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils.

The two teams will meet again at Jack Coombs Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. N.C. A&T will host Appalachian State at War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
