Andrea Johnson, an adjunct professor of the department of sociology and social work, and doctoral candidate in the leadership studies program, will present a paper at the International Conference on Social Stress Reearch in Santa Fe, N.M., May 31-June 2.  The paper is titled "Risk Factors associated with Depression among African American and White Adolescents." Carolyn R. Durham, chair of the department of foreign languages, and Willie F. Hooker, professor of art, presented a paper at the National Association of African American Studies Conference in Baton Rough, La.  "Clack Artists of the United States and Brazil:  Points of Contact" compared visual art by selected artists of African descent from teh United States and Brazil and their respective cultural traditions.  Durham and Hooker explained the pertinent Historical, social and cultural issues that affected teh Afro-Brazilian population at specific points in time and displayed works of art.  They also highlighted parallels between Brazilian and American artists and dissected the longer tradition of artistic expression of the African Diaspora. Vallie Guthrie, director of the Greensboro Area Mathematics and Science Education Center (GAMSEC) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, was one of 11 recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring who were panelists in the 2008 Mentoring workshop for current and future science, technology, engineering and math faculty Margaret Kanipes-Spinks, associate professor in the department of chemistry, is the lead author of peer reviewed journal article, "Genetic analysis of lipooligosaccharide core biosynthesis in Campylobacter jejuni 81-176."  The manuscript is published in Journal of Bacteriology, 190 (2008) 1568-1574

Sarla Sharma, professor of psychology, presented two papers at a conference sponsored by Southeastern Psychological Association, march 6-9 in Charlotte, N.C.  The titles of the papers are "Single Motherhood:  Bane or Boon to Self-Development" and "history of Psychology Department of N.C. A&T State University.

Sharma's paper of "HIV/AIDS among Women: International Implications" has been accepted for presentation by the second International Conference on Psychology sponsored by the Institute for Education and Research.  She will present the paper at the conference in Athens, Greece, July 14-17.
