Agricultural Engineering has been offered at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University since 1950.  The program was accredited by the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in 1990, which qualifies graduates to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. In 1996, the name was changed to Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) and in 2002 it was changed to Bioenvironmental Engineering.  This is the only ABET-accredited BEE program among the Historical Black Colleges and Universities. The BEE program is jointly administered by the College of Engineering (COE) and the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (SAES).
