Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) Program Historical Overview:

The Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) program was founded in 2003 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) mentoring program promotes educational equity and excellence for promising Latino high school students grades 10-12, students receive the tools to access higher education opportunities through a three year mentoring program. Through the duration of the program, SLI students work with their mentors in different activities such as college prep sessions, early college classes, campus visits to diverse universities throughout the state, cultural enrichment activities and public service opportunities.

In 2011, North Carolina A&T State University introduced the program on campus under the leadership of the Multicultural Students Center and the Division of Student Affairs. North Carolina A&T State University began a partnership with Ben L. Smith High School who provided the first pilot cohort group of students.

In 2011, the program was financially supported for the first year by UNC – Chapel Hill. However, due to the commitment of the Division of Student Affairs at North Carolina A&T State University, financial support was allocated to host the remaining two years of the first cohort (2011-2014).

Today, N.C. A&T Division of Student Affairs has committed to continue its financial support of the program and to host a second cohort (2014-2017); currently, there are 11 high school students who are actively participating in the program.
