Gerald Spates, MSC Director has nearly 20 years of experience in higher education. As director, Spates provide leadership to support campus diversity curriculum, diversity training, and student centered program and services to ensure that all diverse student communities are included. Prior to arriving at North Carolina A&T States University in 2011, Spates have led institutional departments and initiatives in Student Services; Minority and International Recruitment, Retention and Programming, Student Activities, Veterans Affairs, Tutorial Services, Supplemental Instruction, Student Academic Assessment, Academic Bridge Programs, TRIO Programs (SSS and Upward Bound), Multicultural Affairs, International Students and Scholars Programs, Mentoring Programs and Disability Services of other leading institutions.
Spates holds an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Florida and a graduate degree in counseling education from South Carolina State, studies at Western Kentucky University, and is a current Ph.D. student in Leadership Studies at N.C. A&T. State University.
Manuela Sanchez-Talavera, MSC Office Manager and former Scholar’s Latino Initiative (SLI) Coordinator. Ms. Sanchez has professional experience includes working as a victim’s advocate and client services coordinator. Sanchez provided outreach and support to SLI student parents, High School students and administration. Her responsibility also includes providing leadership to the SLI Student Mentors, developing services and academic opportunities for participating SLI high school students from Ben L. Smith High with college preparation, cultural enrichment, college campus tours and public service activities. She has a B.S. degree in International Business from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Mihoshoty (Miho) Yamaguchi, Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) Coordinator (Part-time/Temporary). As coordinator of the SLI program, her responsibilities includes providing oversight of SLI Student Mentors, high school student participants, coordinating with the SLI School Coordinator to development academic enrichment services, program outreach for student participants, and servicing as liaison between the director of the Multicultural Student Center and coordinator SLI-Capel Hill. Miho was recently promoted in the coordinator role after servicing several years as a SLI student mentor. Miho transferred to NC A&T in the fall 2014 as a Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics Education student; 2017 is her anticipated graduation. Her future career aspirations include obtaining a Master’s degree in Student Affairs and becoming a high school math teacher. She is a native a Miami, Florida and has resided in Reidsville, NC for the past 8 years. Yamaguchi is a certified tutor, and have worked as a substitute teacher, migrant education tutor, and Spanish interpreter with area school systems.
Amber Steele, Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) High School Coordinator (Part-time/Temporary). Steele is a fulltime administrator in the serving High School (Ben L. Smith H.S.), and serves as the liaison between the participating school and the SLI Coordinator. Steele is the first line of contact with the SLI serving school administrators, and assists in coordinating activities with SLI students and parents.
Chau Bang-Thi Nguyen, MSC Graduate Assistantship: Work under the direction and supervision of the director of the Multicultural Student Center to assist in the facilitation of cultural/diversity planning, and provide supervision to the MSC Ambassador Program. Nguyen has a B.S. degree in Psychology from N.C. A&T and is a currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Mental Health Rehabilitation Counseling from N.C. A&T.
Multicultural Student Ambassadors: MSC Student Ambassadors are student volunteers who assist the MSC to implement student centered programs and services designed to support broad issues of diversity campus-wide.
Work-Study Opportunity: Assist MSC staff with daily support needs. This is a 20 hour per work week opportunity.
