2015-2016 Graduate Assistant Position Description

The Graduate Assistant position in Housing & Residence Life requires a 20 hour work week typically Monday- Friday and some weekends during specific times. The successful candidate will work within Housing in one of 3 areas: Business Administration, Student Behavior & Conduct and Aggie Enhancement & Enrichment Program. The Graduate Assistant will be primarily responsible for performing administrative and office support activities for their assigned area. Duties may include fielding telephone calls, receiving and directing visitors, word processing, creating spreadsheets and presentations, filing, faxing, supervising undergraduate staff as well as conducting meetings. Basic Microsoft software skills are required, as well as Internet research abilities and strong communication skills. Graduate Assistants are essential in helping to create a positive work flow environment. 

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled and accepted as a full-time graduate student and carry a minimum of 9 credit hours.
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to hold the position.     
  • Maintain a clear judicial record with the University.
  • Must report to your assigned are on time.
  • Must have a functioning answering device in the room/apartment. Must check office mail, email, and answering devices daily. Must respond in a prompt manner to messages left by residents, colleagues, supervisors, and administration.
  • A written notice of resignation is required 10 business days in advance; noticed should be submitted to immediate supervisor.
  • Display professionalism or characteristics as evidenced by previous leadership experiences, recommendations, and evaluations from the GA Selection and Application process.
  • Display strong interpersonal skills through proven ability to interact effectively with others as perceived through the GA Selection and interview process.
  • All current GAs will be required to reapply each year to be eligible for rehire for the upcoming academic year.

Work Schedule:

  • Minimum 20 hours per week office duty.
  • On-call schedule where carrying a pager is required
  • Assist with the opening and closing of the Residence Halls.

Compensation:

The Graduate Assistant position is compensated with an estimated $13,800.00 package which includes in-state tuition* and monthly stipend of $3,301.00 to be distributed over a 10 month contractual term. This position does not include room and board.  The GA is responsible for securing his/her living arrangements. (The monetary distribution of the GA compensation package is subject to change depending on changes to University fees, i.e. tuition and etc.)

Period of Employment

July– May of Academic Year. Contract is renewable based upon end of year evaluation.
