NSF CREST Bioenergy Center Spring Seminar: Thermochemical Processing of Biomass
Thursday, March 28, 11 a.m.
New Science Building, Room 200
Presenter
Dr. Robert Brown, Iowa State University, Anson Marston Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Gary and Donna Hoover Chair in Mechanical Engineering.
Dr. Brown is the director of ISU’s Bioeconomy Institute and the Center for Sustainable Environmental Technologies. His research focuses on the thermochemical processing of biomass and fossil fuels into energy, fuels, and chemicals.
Abstract
- Thermochemical processing uses heat and catalysts to transform biomass to fuels and biobased chemicals in contrast to the use of enzymes and microorganisms by biochemical processing. Thermochemical processing includes gasification, pyrolysis, and solvolysis, each of which has its advantages and challenges. This talk will provide an overview of these processing options along with the results of recent studies at Iowa State University.
